Team India’s young batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal has expressed his desire to become a captain one day. Jaiswal said that he dreams of leading the team and that’s why he focuses on improving his fitness and skills every single day.

At the moment, Team India is in a transition phase. Players of Jaiswal’s age, like Shubman Gill, are already captaining in Tests and ODIs and serving as vice-captain in T20Is. After the T20 World Cup 2026, Gill could possibly take over the leadership role in all three formats.

Talking about his captaincy ambition on Raj Shamani’s podcast, the left-handed opener said, “I work on my fitness and skills every day. I am learning more about my body because I feel I need to get fitter, work harder, and develop better skills. Every day I focus on how I can become a leader. I want to become a captain. I want to lead a team.”

At 23 years of age, Yashasvi Jaiswal has already made his debut in all three formats for India — Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. He has played 25 Tests, one ODI, and 23 T20 internationals so far, scoring over 2,200 runs in Test cricket.

His place as an opener in the Test team is almost secure for the future. However, he has not yet cemented his spot in the ODI and T20 squads, where he usually serves as a backup opener behind Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. Once Rohit Sharma retires, Jaiswal is expected to get more regular opportunities in limited-overs formats.
