The big question making the rounds right now is whether the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) will get a new president. Former Team India all-rounder Roger Binny turned 70 last month, but after the passing of the National Sports Bill in Parliament on Tuesday, he will remain BCCI president at least until the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for September.
If the state associations within the BCCI agree, Binny can stay in the role until the age of 75. This is now the maximum age limit set for office-bearers of National Sports Federations. The rule will apply to bodies whose international organisations (like the ICC) do not have specific age-related regulations.
A board source told PTI, “Binny will remain in office until the September meeting. Whether he gets a new term will depend on the decision of the members and influential figures within the BCCI.”

Under the new National Sports Bill, the BCCI will also come under its ambit, but the Right to Information (RTI) Act will not apply to it, as the board does not receive any financial assistance from the government.
The BCCI’s legal team is currently studying the provisions of the bill in detail. The source added, “The bill has just been passed. We have time to understand it and discuss it. Opinions will be sought from all stakeholders, including senior players and coaching staff — especially because cricket will be part of the 2028 Olympics.”
Roger Binny became BCCI president in October 2022, succeeding former captain Sourav Ganguly.
