South African cricketer Matthew Breetzke has created history in the world of cricket. The young opener has become the first player in ODI history to score fifty or more runs in each of his first four One-Day International matches.
This achievement came during the second ODI against Australia, where Breetzke once again played a brilliant knock. South Africa was bowled out for 277 runs in 49.1 overs, but Breetzke’s innings stood out. He scored 88 runs off 78 balls, hitting 8 fours and 2 sixes, and missed his second ODI century by just 12 runs.
A Dream Start to His ODI Career
Breetzke has shown amazing form since his ODI debut against Pakistan. Here are his scores so far:
Match | Opponent | Venue | Runs Scored | Balls Faced |
---|---|---|---|---|
1st ODI | Pakistan | Lahore | 150 | 148 |
2nd ODI | Pakistan | Karachi | 83 | 84 |
3rd ODI | Australia | Cairns | 57 | 56 |
4th ODI | Australia | Mackay | 88 | 78 |
With these scores — 150, 83, 57, and 88 — Breetzke has achieved four fifty-plus innings in his first four ODIs, something no other cricketer has ever done.

Comparison with Navjot Singh Sidhu
Before Breetzke, Navjot Singh Sidhu, the former Indian batsman, had also scored four consecutive fifties at the start of his ODI career during the 1987 World Cup. However, Sidhu’s achievement came across five matches because he did not bat in one game against Zimbabwe.
Breetzke, on the other hand, achieved this record in just four matches, making him the fastest player in ODI history to reach this milestone.
Setting New Records
Apart from this feat, Breetzke also holds the record for most runs scored in the first three ODI innings by any batsman. His total runs so far stand at 378 in four matches, an outstanding start for the young South African opener.
