Indian legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin could soon create history as reports suggest that he might become the first high-profile Indian cricketer to play in the Big Bash League (BBL). If all goes well, Ashwin could feature in Australia’s T20 league from this very season.
According to Cricbuzz, Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Todd Greenberg is currently in talks with Ashwin. The discussions reportedly began after Ashwin announced his retirement from the IPL and hinted that he now wants to explore different leagues across the world as an “explorer of the game.”
Which BBL team could Ashwin join?
The decision lies in the hands of Cricket Australia, which will determine the terms of the deal and the number of matches Ravichandran Ashwin will be available for. There are strong chances that he could represent one of the Melbourne-based franchises. Greenberg confirmed that he personally called Ashwin and expressed excitement about the possible deal.
According to him, “Having a champion cricketer like Ashwin in the BBL would take our cricketing summer to a new level.”
Special arrangements for Ashwin’s deal
Most BBL franchises have already spent a major portion of their budgets. In such a case, Cricket Australia may have to make special financial arrangements. There have been similar situations in the past — for example, David Warner was reportedly paid around AUD 80,000 per match. If required, brand deals and endorsements could also be used to fund Ashwin’s contract.
BBL expecting a boost in Asian viewership
The BBL has often been criticised for failing to attract top foreign stars. However, Ashwin’s participation could significantly boost the league’s popularity in Asia, helping it gain a global audience. Moreover, his entry could also fuel discussions about bringing private investments into Australian cricket.
Ashwin’s future plans: Coaching and media
Ashwin has reportedly told Greenberg that he is also serious about coaching and wants to test himself at every opportunity. He might even appear in the ILT20 next year as a player-coach. Apart from cricket, Ashwin is actively working on his vodcast and content creation, showing interest in building a media career.
A new path for Indian cricketers
Recently, Dinesh Karthik joined the SA20 league, but Ashwin’s stature is much bigger. If he signs with the BBL, it could open doors for other top Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah to explore overseas leagues in the future.
Ashwin’s move could be a game-changer — benefitting not just him but Indian cricketers, the BBL, and global cricket. The league would gain viewership, investments, and popularity, while Ashwin would get a chance to start a new chapter as a player, coach, and media personality.
