Team India has suffered a major blow during the first Test against South Africa. Captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the Kolkata Test. The BCCI issued an update on Sunday, 16 November, regarding Gill’s injury. Shubman Gill was injured in the neck while batting against South Africa. Due to this injury, he had to leave the field and did not return to bat again. When Gill did not come out to bat even after all other wickets had fallen, the seriousness of his injury became clear. The BCCI has now confirmed that he has been admitted to the hospital.
Sharing an update on X, the BCCI wrote:
“On Day 2 of the ongoing Test match against South Africa in Kolkata, Captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury. After the end of the day’s play, he was taken to the hospital for further examination. He is currently under observation at the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. The BCCI medical team will continue to monitor him.”
Shubman Gill sustained the injury during the 35th over of India’s first innings. After facing just three balls, he left the field and did not return.
In Gill’s absence, Rishabh Pant is leading the Indian team.
Talking about the match, at the end of Day 2, South Africa had scored 93 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their second innings, taking a 63-run lead. South Africa were earlier bowled out for 159 in the first innings, after which India took a 30-run lead by scoring 189 runs.
