England defeated India by 22 runs on the final day of the Lord’s Test on Monday. The hosts bowled India out for 170 in their second innings to clinch the match and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match Test series. Earlier, Ben Stokes’ side had won the Leeds Test by five wickets, while India had registered a massive 336-run win in the second Test at Edgbaston.
In the Lord’s Test, England won the toss and opted to bat first. They posted 387 runs in their first innings. Joe Root scored 104, while Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse contributed 51 and 56 runs, respectively. In response, India also scored exactly 387 runs. KL Rahul led the way with a century (100), while Rishabh Pant made 74 and Ravindra Jadeja added 72 runs.
In their second innings, England scored 192 runs, setting India a target of 193. However, the Indian team was bowled out for 170, falling 22 runs short of victory.
India’s Second Innings Collapse
India’s second innings began on a shaky note. At the score of 5, Jofra Archer dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck, caught behind by Jamie Smith. KL Rahul and Karun Nair tried to steady the innings, adding 36 runs in 66 balls for the second wicket. Brydon Carse broke the partnership, trapping Nair lbw for 14 off 33 balls.
Captain Shubman Gill, who failed to impress in the first innings, also fell cheaply in the second, lbw to Carse. Nightwatchman Akash Deep was bowled by Ben Stokes after scoring just 1 run off 11 balls.
India resumed Day 5 at 58/4. In the morning session, they lost three more wickets. Rishabh Pant (9) and KL Rahul (39) were dismissed before lunch, followed by Washington Sundar, who was out for a duck. Nitish also departed after scoring 13.
In the second session, Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah stitched a gritty 35-run stand off 132 balls before Ben Stokes ended it by having Bumrah caught by Sam Cook for 5 off 54 deliveries. Jadeja was then joined by Mohammad Siraj, and the pair added 23 runs off 80 balls for the final wicket. Siraj was bowled by Shoaib Bashir for 4, while Jadeja remained unbeaten on 61 off 181 balls, completing his 25th Test half-century off 150 deliveries.
For England, Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes took three wickets each in the second innings. Brydon Carse claimed two wickets, while Chris Woakes and Shoaib Bashir picked up one wicket apiece.
