Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal continues his impressive form against England. In the first innings of the second Test being played in Birmingham, Jaiswal scored 87 runs, giving Team India a solid start. Although he missed out on a century by just 13 runs, he set a significant record during his innings. Jaiswal has now become the highest-scoring Indian opener in a Test innings at Birmingham.
His 87-run knock, which came off 107 balls, is now the highest individual score by an Indian opener in a Test match at Birmingham. He broke a 51-year-old record previously held by Sudhir Naik, who had scored 77 runs off 165 balls in 1974. Legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar holds the third spot on this list with a 68-run innings at the same ground in 1979.
While Jaiswal has performed exceptionally well in Test cricket overall, his numbers against England are particularly outstanding. He seems to enjoy batting against this opposition. In the recent home Test series against England, Jaiswal had smashed two double centuries and made a stunning entry into the longest format of the game. He also registered three half-centuries in the same series.
Now, on his first tour to England, he began with a century—scoring 101 runs in the first innings of the Leeds Test. Though he couldn’t score much in the second innings of that match, he bounced back in the second Test with a solid 87, showing impressive consistency. His batting has proven to be a big boost for the Indian team, especially on this challenging tour with a relatively inexperienced batting lineup.
