The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considered the richest cricket board in the world, and a major reason behind this is the Indian Premier League (IPL). Recently, a major report regarding BCCI’s financial year 2023-24 has come to light. According to the report, IPL alone contributed 59% of BCCI’s total revenue for that year. During this period, Jay Shah served as the Secretary of BCCI, and under his leadership, the board underwent a major transformation and became significantly wealthier. The board’s income continues to grow day by day.
IPL’s Massive Contribution
As per a report by ‘The Hindu Business Line,’ BCCI earned ₹9,741.7 crore during the financial year 2023-24. Out of this, IPL alone generated ₹5,761 crore. This means IPL accounted for 59% of the total financial contribution. Additionally, BCCI earned ₹361 crore from the sale of non-IPL media rights, including international broadcasting rights.
Interest Income and ICC Distribution
The board also earned ₹987 crore just from interest income in the same period. From the International Cricket Council (ICC) distribution alone, BCCI received ₹1,042 crore. Apart from the IPL, domestic tournaments such as the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and CK Nayudu Trophy also help increase BCCI’s revenue. These tournaments significantly benefit the board, which now holds reserves of nearly ₹30,000 crore.
Profits from WPL as Well
Following the success of the IPL, BCCI launched the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which earned ₹378 crore during the 2023-24 season. Moreover, when the Indian team tours other countries, BCCI also earns from these matches. The men’s team tours brought in ₹361 crore. Apart from this, the board earned ₹400 crore through other sources, including advertisements. In terms of earnings, cricket boards from other countries are far behind BCCI.
