Discussions have been going on for the past several days regarding Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s inclusion in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. The tournament is scheduled to be held in the UAE from 9 to 28 September. Under Gill’s captaincy, India recently performed well on the England tour, and Jaiswal also managed to leave a strong impression. However, according to media reports, both Gill and Jaiswal may find it difficult to secure a place in the squad for the Asia Cup.

    Team announcement likely on Tuesday

It is being speculated that the Indian team for this tournament could be announced on Tuesday. Reports suggest that the team management may rely on the T20 core group that has been performing consistently under Gautam Gambhir. With Gambhir as head coach, India has won 13 out of their last 15 T20 matches. Notably, this year’s Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format.

    Gill in outstanding form

India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill is currently in exceptional form. At just 25, he was handed the leadership role, and he has excelled both as captain and as a batsman. Under his captaincy, India managed to draw the five-match series against England 2-2. Gill finished as the highest run-scorer of the series with 754 runs at an average of 75.40. He struck four centuries, including a best of 269 runs. For his outstanding batting, Gill was also named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July.

In 2025 so far, Gill has scored 1,234 runs in 20 innings at an average of 64.94, including six centuries—the most by any batsman across formats this year—along with two half-centuries. He is currently the second-highest run-getter of the year, behind England’s Ben Duckett, who has amassed 1,290 runs in 23 matches at an average of 47.77, with three centuries and eight fifties, his best being 165.

Search for an experienced middle-order batsman

According to reports, India is looking for an experienced middle-order batsman who can adapt well to the slow pitches of the UAE. Keeping this in mind, Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma are being considered for inclusion in India’s T20 squad.
