The Asia Cup 2025 is less than two weeks away, but a recent promotional video released by the official broadcaster has triggered a major backlash on social media. Although the promo is meant for the entire tournament, it focuses heavily on the India vs Pakistan clash scheduled for 14th September. What was intended to create excitement has now backfired.
Social Media Backlash Over Asia Cup Promo
A large section of social media users is calling for a boycott of the Asia Cup. While the tournament and the India-Pakistan match will take place as planned, many people are angry, saying the promo is insensitive considering the recent tensions between the two nations.
The promo also features former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, which has made him a target of criticism. Users have recalled his earlier statements about the Pahalgam terror attack and are questioning his involvement in the promotion.
What the Promo Shows
The promotional video by Sony Sports Network features Indian T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, former Indian batter Virender Sehwag, and Pakistan’s star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi. It shows an Indian Muslim family watching the India vs Pakistan match at home. As Suryakumar faces Shaheen, the tension builds, and the family prays for India’s victory. When India wins, the family celebrates, and Sehwag appears promoting the Asia Cup with the message “Rag Rag Mein Bharat” (India in Every Vein).
Why the Promo Has Sparked Outrage
India vs Pakistan matches always create massive excitement and often overshadow the rest of the tournament. Organisers and sponsors usually highlight this rivalry to boost viewership and advertising revenue, which is common even during ICC events like the World Cup and Champions Trophy.
However, this time the backlash is stronger because of the recent conflict between the two countries. In April 2025, Pakistani terrorists carried out a brutal attack in Pahalgam, killing 26 civilians. Following this, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, destroying several terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
In response, Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases using missiles and drones, but India intercepted all attacks and retaliated by destroying multiple Pakistani airbases and defence systems. A ceasefire is currently in place, but India has made it clear that Operation Sindoor is paused, not ended.
#BoycottAsiaCup Trends on Social Media
Because of the ongoing tensions, many social media users have called the promo an insult to the victims of the Pahalgam attack and a compromise on national pride. Users are criticising the BCCI, broadcasters, and sponsors, accusing them of prioritising profit over national sentiments.
Virender Sehwag Faces Criticism
Virender Sehwag, who appears in the promo, is also facing backlash. Users are reminding him of his earlier social media post after the Pahalgam attack, where he praised the Indian Army and said Pakistan would be taught a lesson they would never forget. Many are now accusing him of contradicting his earlier stance by promoting the Asia Cup involving Pakistan.
