Andre Russell Announces Retirement from IPL Ahead of 2026 Season
West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has officially announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) ahead of the 2026 mini-auction. The announcement came shortly after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the franchise with which he is most associated, chose not to retain him for the upcoming season. Russell expressed gratitude to KKR and its supporters for 12 memorable seasons and confirmed that while his IPL chapter ends, he will continue playing in other T20 leagues worldwide.
Transition to KKR Power Coach Role
Alongside his retirement from playing in the IPL, Russell will take on a new role within KKR’s support staff as the “Power Coach” starting from the 2026 season. This role involves mentoring KKR’s batsmen, especially in power-hitting and maintaining the energy and impact he showed as a player in the field and with the ball. Russell described the title “Power Coach” as a perfect fit for him, leveraging his aggressive batting style and dynamic presence on the ground to help the team in various departments.
Career Highlights and Impact in IPL
Andre Russell played a total of 140 IPL matches, scoring 2,651 runs at an average close to 28 and a blistering strike rate above 174. Most of his career success came with KKR, where he played 133 matches, scoring 2,593 runs. He played a pivotal role in KKR’s IPL titles in 2014 and 2024 and earned the IPL Most Valuable Player awards in 2015 and 2019. Russell accumulated 16 Player-of-the-Match awards for KKR, making him one of the franchise’s most celebrated overseas players. Despite a dip in form and performance in recent seasons, his fearsome reputation as a power hitter and match-winner remains intact.

Reasons Behind Retirement and Release from KKR
The decision to retire was influenced by his release from KKR ahead of the 2026 auction, which freed up significant budget space for the franchise. His form had declined in recent IPL seasons, with relatively low contributions with bat and ball in 2025. Russell acknowledged that he did not want to fade away quietly as a player and chose to retire on his terms. Being made the Power Coach allows him to remain part of the KKR family and contribute his expertise off the field.
This transition marks the end of an era as a player but opens a new chapter for Andre Russell within the IPL ecosystem, where his experience will now be invaluable to the next generation of KKR players.
