Several cricketers have expressed surprise over Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Now, former South African captain AB de Villiers has also joined the list of those questioning the decision.
He expressed shock at Iyer not being included in the Indian team for the UAE-based tournament. De Villiers called the decision “strange” and hinted that there might be reasons beyond cricket behind it.
Iyer’s Brilliant IPL 2025 Performance
Under Iyer’s captaincy, Punjab Kings reached the final of IPL 2025, although they lost the title clash to RCB. Iyer had a fantastic season with the bat, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches at an impressive average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07.
Key Role in India’s Champions Trophy Win
Based on his recent form, many expected Iyer to be a part of the Asia Cup squad. Earlier this year, he played a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph, finishing as the highest run-scorer among Indian batsmen with 243 runs in five matches. Even skipper Rohit Sharma praised him for his outstanding contribution.
De Villiers Questions the Omission
During a live chat on X, AB de Villiers shared his thoughts: “I’m surprised by this exclusion; it’s a tough one, guys. I was reviewing the squad and wondering where Shreyas could fit in. I think this decision will upset him the most because he’s been playing really good cricket for the last few years. He has matured a lot and shown great leadership qualities. But who knows what’s happening behind closed doors? I don’t know, you don’t know… maybe even Shreyas doesn’t know.”
No T20Is Since December 2023
The former Proteas skipper suggested that non-cricketing factors might have influenced the selectors’ decision. “Sometimes when it’s a 50-50 call between two players, I always prefer the one who uplifts the team. But Shreyas hasn’t played a T20I since December 2023, which might have gone against him.”
De Villiers further added, “Maybe there are too many leaders in the dressing room. I really have no idea, but it’s strange to see such a talented player missing out, especially considering the leadership qualities he brings. Maybe one day the truth will come out, and we’ll know why Shreyas is struggling to secure a place in Team India.”
