West Indies’ explosive batter Nicholas Pooran shocked everyone on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, by announcing his retirement from international cricket. At just 29 years of age, Pooran’s decision to step away from international cricket has taken the cricketing world by surprise. He shared the news with his fans through social media, calling it a very difficult decision. Pooran played over 160 white-ball matches for West Indies but never featured in Test cricket.
Nicholas Pooran retires from international cricket after scoring more than 4,000 runs in 61 T20 Internationals and 106 One Day Internationals. His retirement is especially surprising because he had recently opted out of the white-ball series in England to rest, as he was actively playing for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025. He performed brilliantly for Rishabh Pant’s team, scoring 524 runs in 14 matches at a stunning strike rate of nearly 200.
On Instagram, Pooran wrote: “After deep reflection, I have decided to retire from international cricket.”

Pooran was recently the captain of West Indies in T20 Internationals, but he has now announced his retirement just eight months ahead of the next T20 World Cup.
He wrote further: “This game we love has given us so much and will continue to give – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and the honour of representing the West Indies. Wearing the maroon jersey, standing for the anthem, and giving my all every time I stepped onto the field… it’s hard to put into words what it truly meant to me. Leading the team as captain was an honour I will always hold close to my heart.”
