Now, a big update has emerged regarding Shubman Gill’s place in the team. According to reports, Gill may not be able to secure a spot in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad.
Will Shubman Gill be dropped?
According to media reports, it will be difficult for Shubman Gill to find a place in the squad because the team already has options like Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Both have performed exceptionally well in the T20 format. Talking about Sanju Samson, he has scored three centuries in his last 10 T20 matches. If Samson is included in the team, he is likely to open the innings. The board is reportedly not in favour of changing his batting position.
Additionally, Abhishek Sharma is also expected to be included, as he has been in explosive form in this format. Tilak Varma, currently ranked the world’s No. 2 batsman, may also be part of the squad. In such a scenario, Gill might only make the team if he is appointed vice-captain. For some time now, reports have suggested that Gill could be included as vice-captain in place of Axar Patel. Rinku Singh is also expected to feature in the Asia Cup as a finisher.
Shubman Gill’s performance in the England tour
India recently toured England for a five-match Test series, which ended in a 2–2 draw. Gill was the highest run-scorer in the series, amassing 754 runs in five matches at an average of 75.40. He was also named Player of the Series against England. Gill has delivered impressive performances in white-ball cricket as well.
In the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), he scored 650 runs in 15 matches at an average of 50, including six half-centuries, with a highest score of 93* runs. Earlier, he represented India in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where he scored 188 runs in five matches at an average of 47, including a highest score of 101* runs.
