India Wins 2nd Test at Edgbaston

On Sunday, Team India registered a historic 336-run victory over England in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The match, played at Edgbaston, saw India set a massive target of 608 runs for England in the fourth innings. However, the hosts were bowled out for just 271 runs in their second innings. With this emphatic win, India levelled the five-match Test series 1-1. England had won the first Test in Leeds by five wickets. Jamie Smith was the top scorer for England in the second innings, while Akash Deep starred for India with six wickets.

India’s First-Ever Test Win at Edgbaston

This victory marks India’s maiden Test win at Edgbaston. Prior to this, India had played eight Test matches at the venue, losing seven and drawing one. The last time India played here was in 2022, when they lost to England by seven wickets. Before this match, 56 Tests had been played at Edgbaston—teams batting first had won 29 times, while teams bowling first had won 12 matches. 15 matches had ended in a draw.

    Gill’s Double Century and Siraj’s Six-Fer

India posted a mammoth total of 587 runs in their first innings. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a brilliant double century (269), supported by Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89). In response, England’s top order collapsed, but a resilient 303-run partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith helped the team post 407 runs. Remarkably, six English batsmen were dismissed for ducks. Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers, claiming six wickets.

    Akash Deep Shines Bright

In their second innings, India declared at 427/6, thanks to Shubman Gill’s 161 and fifties from KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jadeja. Chasing 608 for victory, England’s top order failed once again, losing half their side for under 100 runs. Akash Deep struck crucial blows, completing his five-wicket haul by dismissing Jamie Smith (88) and wrapping up the innings by removing Brydon Carse. He took 6 wickets in the second innings, finishing the match with a total of 10 wickets. Jamie Smith was England’s highest scorer with 88 runs.

The third Test between India and England will be played at Lord’s from July 10.
