The third day of the ongoing first Test match between India and England ended early due to rain. India scored 90/2 in their second innings and now lead by 96 runs. KL Rahul is unbeaten on 47 while Shubman Gill remains not out on 6.
In the first innings, India posted a total of 471 runs. England replied with 465, thanks to a century from Ollie Pope and a 99-run knock by Harry Brook. This gave India a slender first-innings lead of six runs.
India’s Second Innings
India did not get off to a good start in their second innings. Brydon Carse dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal for just 4 runs, caught behind by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith when the team’s score was just 16.
After that, KL Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan steadied the innings. The duo added 66 runs for the second wicket before Ben Stokes broke the partnership, having Sudharsan caught by Zak Crawley. Sudharsan scored 30 off 48 balls.
At stumps on Day 3, KL Rahul was batting on 47 off 75 balls with 7 fours, while Shubman Gill had made 6 runs off 10 balls, including one boundary.
England’s First Innings
England were bowled out for 465 in their first innings, giving India a 6-run lead. They resumed Day 3 at 209/3, with Ollie Pope on 101 and Harry Brook yet to open his account.
Earlier, Ben Duckett had contributed 62 runs while Zak Crawley was dismissed for 4.
Prasidh Krishna gave India an early breakthrough on Day 3, dismissing Ollie Pope for 106 runs (137 balls, 14 fours), caught behind by Rishabh Pant. Then, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes added 51 runs for the fourth wicket before Mohammad Siraj sent back the England skipper for 20 runs off 52 balls, also caught by Pant. With this catch, Pant completed 150 dismissals in Test cricket, becoming only the third Indian wicketkeeper to achieve this milestone.
At 276/5, England needed a solid partnership. Brook and Jamie Smith delivered, adding 73 runs in 88 balls for the sixth wicket. However, Prasidh Krishna once again stepped up and dismissed Smith for 40 runs (five fours and one six). Brook then partnered with Chris Woakes and added 49 runs for the seventh wicket before falling agonisingly short of his century — dismissed for 99 by Prasidh Krishna.
Woakes continued with Brydon Carse, contributing a 55-run stand for the eighth wicket. Carse was eventually bowled by Siraj for 22 off 23 balls. Woakes followed soon after, scoring 38 runs (three fours and two sixes) before being dismissed by Bumrah. Josh Tongue managed 11 runs, and Shoaib Bashir remained unbeaten on 1.
