England pacer Jofra Archer is set to make his return to red-ball cricket after an absence of more than four years. Archer has been picked in Sussex’s squad for a red-ball match against Durham, marking a significant step in his comeback journey. He last played a Test match in February 2021 and bowled with the red ball for the last time in May 2021. A series of injuries forced him out of the format, but after recently making a return to England’s white-ball side, Archer now looks ready to resume his red-ball career as well.
Will Archer Play the 2nd Test Against India?
Earlier this month, England selector Luke Wright mentioned that if Archer plays for Sussex, he could be available for selection in the second Test against India. Captain Ben Stokes also supported the idea, saying the 30-year-old is eager to make his comeback in Test cricket. The second Test between India and England is scheduled to take place from 2nd to 6th July in Birmingham.
Comeback After 1587 Days!
Archer last played a Test match for England on 24-25 February 2021, against India in Ahmedabad. Since then, he has been away from the international Test arena. If selected for the second Test, it would mark his return to Test cricket after 1587 days.
Multiple injuries kept Archer out of red-ball action for years. He was also ruled out of the ongoing first Test in Leeds due to a thumb injury sustained during IPL 2025. However, his inclusion in the Sussex red-ball squad has opened the door for his return to England’s Test side. Should he rejoin the national team, his presence is expected to add a sharp edge to England’s bowling attack.
